Forest is an important natural resource which supplies a lot to the ecology and economy of the nations. Forestry is the science of development and care of forest. It is concerned with management of forest by protecting, conserving and upgrading of forest resources. Forester protects forest resources from fire, pests, disease, encroachment and indiscriminate felling of trees. Thus, services of specially trained personnel like forestry specialists, forestry management experts and forest officers are needed to maintain and restore the forest cover, forest wealth and resources.

Forest wealth contributes extensively to the country’s economy. Effective and controlled use of forest wealth may result in issues like global warming, deforestation, global climatic change, water scarcity, natural disasters etc. In short, Forestry involves protection of forests and farming of trees to ensure timber supply.

Professionals in Forestry Courses can find employment in areas of forest and wildlife conservation as:

• Forest Range Officers
• Zoo curators

Depending on their field of specialization, foresters can work either in offices, laboratories, outdoors or opt for research work in various institutions. Various employment opportunities exist with governmental, non-governmental organisations interested in preservation of forest resources, corporates, industries, Indian Council Of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) and its affiliated, Forestry Research Institutes, Wildlife Research Institutes, Zoological Parks, Wildlife Ranges. They can also work as industrial and agricultural consultants or as tutors in education sector.

Remuneration:

The pay packet of Forestry graduates working in government agencies ranges between Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month depending upon qualification and experiences. Professionals working in corporate houses and consultancy companies get profitable pay packages along with numerous fringe benefits. Those working in international agencies, media houses and consultancy firms, get higher salary and other allowances. Now, NGOs offer rewarding pay packages to experts in forestry and wildlife. Private consultants have also good earning depending upon number and nature of their clients.

Eligibilty:
 

A career in Forestry can be started with a B.Sc degree in Forestry. The minimum qualification required for B.Sc Forestry is a pass in 10+2 with physics, chemistry and biology or agriculture as subjects. Further the Masters level in M.Sc Forestry can be pursued with specialisation in subjects like Forest Management, Commercial Forestry, Forest Economics, Wood Science & Technology, Wildlife Science, Veterinary Science etc. Some professional institutions offer Post Graduate Diploma in Forest Management. Interested students can opt for M.Phil or PhD degree in Forestry.
