Career in Computer Aided Design


Computer aided design or CAD involves the designer’s use of computer as an alternative to the more traditional types of drawing and modelling and it’s an indispensable tool for graphic and product designers, engineers, interior designers and architects. It helps the designers in making or preparing drawings, specifications, parts lists, and other design related elements using special graphics and computer programs that are calculation intensive. This technology is widely used for wide variety of fields such as architecture, shipbuilding, electronics, aerospace, prosthetics, naval and automotive engineering. Computer aided design is used widely to create computer animation for special effects in movies, advertising and technical manuals. CAD systems now include three-dimensional modelling and computer simulated operation of the model. The design of geometric models for use as object shapes is called computer aided geometric design (CAGD).
Computer aided design is used to design curves and figures in two – dimensional space or curves, surfaces, or solids in three – dimensional objects. Due to its enormous economic importance, computer aided design has been the major driving force behind research in computational geometry, computer graphics and discrete differential geometry. CAD is mainly used in the detailed engineering of 3D models or 2D models of physical components and throughout engineering process from conceptual design and layout of products to definition of manufacturing methods of components.
The people who work in this field are called: Designers, CAD Monkeys, Automotive Design Engineers, and Digital Innovation Engineers.

Nature of Work:
There is an obvious promotion path from engineering craftsperson to draughts person and engineering technician by studying part time for a relevant EDEXCEL/BTEC HNC/D or SQA NC group award qualification or by acquiring NVQ/SVQ level 3. For acquiring these qualifications, there are the possibilities of part time studying, regardless of whether one is an engineering operative or is in a non-engineering post. Then can apply for an engineering technician job.
You should have a very good status in subjects like science and technology at secondary and higher secondary levels of education. Graduates in science too can apply.
